To understand my love of ska is to understand where I was living when I first learned what ska was. The year was 1995. The place was Southern California. I had just moved to California after living overseas for three years. Sure, I knew who Madness was because of “One Step Beyond,” but that was just ‘80s music to me at the time.

Mike Berault (keyboardist for Southern California ska/pop/punk band Bite Me Bambi and co-host of Mixtape Mixtape Podcast; his previous band, LP3 & The Tragedy, toured with X on the group's 40th anniversary tour in 2017): I remember I watched The Decline Of Western Civilization [1981 documentary about the Los Angeles punk scene], and I saw John Doe giving tattoos in the dressing room before their gig with a needle; this was during the AIDS scare when I saw it. I thought to myself, "These guys are so fucking punk!"

They can be classified a number of different ways, but it seems that ska rises to the top — perhaps with a little pop and maybe some punk thrown in for good measure. Tahlena – Thanks! I’m glad to hear that. Bite Me Bambi is comprised of all Orange County ska musicians from bands like Save Ferris, My Super Hero and Starpool. We’re drawn to it, because it’s all we know. Some members of our band were originators of the third wave, Orange County sound. We like keeping our roots in the OC sound while still trying to bring it into the 21st century.

Chikami also revealed the role the movie Josie and the Pussycats has played in her life, and a band prank involving Smirnoff Ice.

“We thought it was hilarious to write a song about going to your favorite strip club on a Sunday. And we were like, ‘If this is funny tomorrow we’ll make the band learn it.’ And we still thought it was funny,” she said.
